Andrew Watson (1857-1902) is widely considered to be the world’s first black association footballer to play at the international level.

Born in Demerara, British Guiana, in 1857, Andrew Watson came to England to finish public school in Halifax and this is also when his football career began. In 1875, Watson became a successful player for Scotland’s Queens Park..

Watson was capped three times for Scotland between 1881 and 1882.  He was the first black player to win a major competition, the Scottish Cup, in 1881 and to play in the English FA Cup.
